BBC Riding Club holds its weekly sessions at Trent Park Stables at East Pole Fm House, Bramley Road, London, N14 4UX. The tel is 020 8363 8630.
If you cannot make a lesson at the last minute, ring Trent Park so the poor horse isn't stood around waiting for you, and can have his pony nuts early.
If you are coming by Tube, take the Piccadilly Line to Oakwood, turn right out the station and it's a 5 to 10 minute walk down the road. The stables are on the bend, on the left. There is usually someone around who can give you a lift back to the Tube if it's dark in the evening. In fact, often you may be able to get at least a lift from work, if not back to your house.
Because of concerns of the walk to/from the stables/pub/tube, we are running a lift system between members. In the club room, there is now a sheet where people who can offer lifts will put their names down. Don't let lifts stop you riding, we can usually sort something out.
There's plenty of parking if you're coming by car.
Here is a map of the area on Streetmap.
The committee holds regular meetings with Trent Park. So if you have any issues with Trent Park that you need raised, please inform the committee. Please do not approach Trent Park yourself.
After your ride, your horse should be untacked and fed, assuming your horse is not booked for another ride afterwards. There should be a bucket of food outside the stable door, so please place it inside the stable for your horse after you have untacked.
Calling all experienced riders! If you're booked to ride at 8.30 can you help with the beginners class from time to time at 7.30? Occasionally we have new riders who haven't sat on a horse before and it helps the lessons run more smoothly if someone can lead the horse in walk and trot until the rider becomes more confident. Please let Diane McGregor know if you are willing to help so there's a pool of people to call on.
Rules of the School
Call out or knock at gate and wait to be told to come in
Having led your horse in, do not stand within kicking distance (about 6ft) beside or behind another horse when adjusting your girth or stirrups
Wait until mounting block is free before approaching it with your horse
While warming up, keep a kicking distance away, whether behind or alongside another horse
Pass left shoulder to left shoulder when going in opposite directions
Never halt on or too near the track except when asked to do so in an exercise by your instructor
The faster pace has priority on the track. If a rider is cantering, those trotting or walking should move to an inner track or ride well behind. Similarly a trotting horse takes precedence over one walking
Before turning right or left make sure it is safe to do so. Riders doing lateral work have priority of space and it is up to other riders to move away from the line they are taking
If you find yourself too close to the horse in front, turn away and find an empty space
